Volunteers make city great place to live
By QUALA MATOCHA
Get involved. That's the motto behind several organizations that make El Campo such a great place to live.

Organizations like the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Pilot Club, El Campo Woman's Club and Beautify El Campo Extension (BEEs) have made numerous contributions to enhance the city over the years.

Anyone planning to make El Campo their permanent home can choose from a myriad of organizations to fit their interests. After all, El Campo people are all about the business of making their town the best it can be.

Projects like the Civic Center, Rotary Park and Aquatic Center are three major contributions of local Rotarians.

It is the support of citizens who make donations to the club's annual seafood dinner, auction and raffle, set for March 15 this year, that make this possible. The Rotary Club also sponsors an Interact Club at El Campo High School.

Pilot Club inspires local business and prof essional women to help with that club's primary mission in raising funds for research of brain-related disorders each year. They also sponsor El Campo High School's Anchor Club.

Lions Club is another organization with several missions. Today, Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired through their SightFirst program. Locally, Lions offer monetary assistance for eye appointments and glasses to those who are in need.

They participate in eyeglass recycling and sponsor students to attend Lions Camp in Kerrville each summer for children with physical disabilities and diabetes.

Woman's Club members are known for constructing and donating items for cancer patients at M.D. Anderson each year.

And the BEEs are noted for making El Campo more pleasing with planters and decorative street lights throughout the downtown area. They also recognize area businesses that keep El Campo looking great.

While there are numerous adult organizations, some are targeted for younger groups, such as the Boys & Girl Club, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, SPJST (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas) and 4-H.
